Where to Leave Luggage in Heraklion for a Few Hours
Need to leave your bags in Heraklion for just a few hours? How short-term storage in the city centre works, what it costs and how to time it around your plans.
A few hours is the most common reason people look for somewhere to leave luggage in Heraklion. Not a week, not a whole trip — just the gap between checking out and moving on, or between arriving and being allowed into your room. Here is how to handle that gap without spending it next to a suitcase.
The usual few-hour gaps
- Checkout at 11:00, with a flight or ferry in the evening
- Arriving in the morning, with check-in not until the afternoon
- A ferry that arrives hours before your onward bus leaves
- A free morning in the centre between two parts of a trip
A short stay is charged as one day
We do not charge by the hour. A drop-off and collection on the same day counts as one day, whether you leave your bags for two hours or ten. With the 10% online discount, that works out as:
- Backpack — €2.70
- Cabin or medium suitcase — €3.60
- Large suitcase — €4.50
A couple with a cabin bag and a backpack pays €6.30 for the day. You pay at the store when you collect, in cash or by card.
Your options for a few hours
If you are staying in a hotel, ask whether it keeps luggage after checkout. Many do, but it means going back to the hotel before you leave, which is not always on your way. Luggage lockers are another option people search for; they suit a single small bag, although compartments come in fixed sizes.
Staffed storage in the city centre sits between the two. It is on the way to the airport bus and within walking distance of the port, it takes bags of any size, and a person hands them back to you. We are at Sfakianaki 4, about a minute from Saint Minas Cathedral and five minutes from Lions Square.
Book, or just walk in?
For a short stop you can simply walk in during regular opening hours: Monday to Friday 09:00–21:00, Saturday 09:00–20:00 and Sunday 10:00–20:00. Booking online is still worth it — it takes about 30 seconds, takes 10% off the price and needs no account or email.
There is one case where booking ahead really matters. On Monday, Wednesday and Saturday after 15:00, and all day on Sunday, staff are on site by appointment. If your few hours fall in those windows, book first so someone is there to meet you.
What a few free hours can look like
Three or four hours is enough for a coffee at Lions Square, a walk down 25th August Street to the Venetian harbour and the Koules Fortress, and lunch near the market.
